Welcome

The Sydney Masters Hockey Association (SMHA) was established in 1982 to administer Men's Masters hockey within the greater Sydney region.

SMHA has the largest, longest running annual competitions and been the most successful Men's Masters Hockey Association in NSW since its inception. It is overseen by a Board of Directors elected by members (under a Constitution).

The annual competitions now boast 30 teams (from 14 Clubs), spread across 5 divisions from Premier League, Sydney Cup, Masters League, Senior Masters Division and Grand Masters Division, with over 500 players from ages Over 34 up to 80+.

All matches played at Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre (Tuesday and Wednesday nights) between February and September.

Sydney also enters representative teams (from Over 34's up to Over 70's) at the annual NSW Championships, and enjoys a high level of player representation in the selected NSW and Australian Men's Masters teams.

New players

The Sydney Masters Hockey Association welcomes all new Men's Masters players, officials and supporters.

If you are new to Sydney and / or have been a previous hockey player (or umpire) and you are now looking to return to play in a successful mid week competition, please contact the SMHA Competition Managers via e-mail at - competition@smhockey.com.au if you require assistance in finding a club / team to play with.

Welcome

Welcome again to all our returning players, officials, sponsors and supporters, and also to those of you who are “new” and will be joining the 2024 season of Men’s Masters Hockey in Sydney.

We are again looking forward to an enjoyable and successful year ahead for Masters hockey in Sydney.

This will include competition matches (3 week preseason from early February then main season from early March), a full representative program of NSW and Australian Championships, our annual Intercity Challenge against Canberra (where we have won The Merv Goodridge and Doug Dawson Cup since its inception in 2021) and the 2024 Masters World Cups in South Africa (October) and NZ (November).

On behalf of the 2024 Board of Directors, we wish all teams the best of luck and trust that in 2024 everyone enjoys a successful Sydney Men's Masters Hockey season, both on and off the field.

Welcome

Congratulations to all the players and officials in 2024 for the continuation of the outstanding results now achieved by the Over 45's and Over 60's teams at the Sydney Championship (held on 3 to 5 May).

The Over 45's team won all 6 matches (with some brilliant team hockey) overcoming the arch rival Tamworth 2-1 in the final to regain the NSW Champions title.

The Over 60 No 1 team played well to reach the final but were outclassed by a very good Sydney South (Sutherland) team who were undefeated and regained the NSW Champions title (now 2 of the 3 years since inception of the Over 60's Division).

Well done to the Over 60's No 2 team (who were mostly all new to representative hockey) for making the semi-finals and finishing 4th - a good time was had by everyone.

Overall a very successful Championship with a Gold (2 if counting Sydney South - all who play in the Sydney Masters competition), a Silver and a 4th.

Also good result for Metro Sydney West (majority of these players play in the Sydney Masters competition) who won the Over 45 B Division final.

Wollongong Championship (5-7 April) for the Over 40's, 55's and 70's teams.

The Over 40's overcame a slow start to play in the final going down to Illawarra (so finished 2nd).

Both the Over 55 teams won their finals to be declared NSW Champions - No 1 team defeated defending champions Parkes 1-0, whilst the No 2 team also over came a slow start to defeat Northern Inland in the final 2-1 (after penalty shoot out).

The Over 70's were unlucky to have a key match washed out and finished 2nd behind Manning Valley

Overall a very successful Championships with 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals.

Sydney Masters will be competing in all the 2024 NSW Men's Masters Hockey Championships.

The final 2024 Championship details are -

Newcastle (Friday 24 to Sunday 26 May)

Over 34's  (2 teams)                                 Over 50's  (2 teams)                                Over 65's  (1 team)

Nominations for 2024 have now closed
